Every Estonian national has the obligation to update their data in the Estonian Population Register. If you have moved in Austria, Switzerland or Slovakia; had a child, got married/divorced; changed your name or a close relative has died, then this family event must be entered in the Estonian Population Register. The procedure is free of charge and you can do it with the help of the Estonian Embassy in Vienna. 

You can send the documents to the embassy by post (Wohllebengasse 9/12, 1040 Vienna), including a free-form application with your contact details. Original documents will be returned to you by registered mail.

Registration of residence

If you reside permanently in Austria, Switzerland or Slovakia, you are required to update your place of residence with your foreign address in the Estonian Population Register.

To update your address, please log in to the e-population register via eesti.ee using your ID-card, Mobile-ID or Smart-ID.

If you are unable to use the online services, you may fill in the application form on paper and send it digitally signed or scanned by email [email protected] or by post. Please include a copy of your valid passport or ID-card.

Please note that you can still keep your Estonian address in the Estonian Population Register as an additional address.

Birth

Please send us by post:

  • originial birth certificate (multilingual CIEC form)

  • Copy of the identity document of each parent;

  • For a child born in Switzerland/Austria whose parents are not married, an additional document concerning custody rights must be submitted.

Marriage

Please send us by post:

  • original marriage certificate (multilingual CIEC form)

  • A copy of each spouse’s identity document

Note: Slovakia does not issue CIEC certificates. You must submit the original certificate of the civil event along with a sworn translation into Estonian or English.

Divorce

Please send us by post:

  • The original divorce certificate;
  • In addition, one of the following documents is required:
    • either a Brussels IIa Regulation Document in matrimonial matter in Estonian or English. (You can apply for this certificate from the court Austria or Slovakia where the divorce took place. If they only agree to issue the document in German, you will need to have it translated into Estonian or English by a sworn translator);
    • or an official translation of the divorce decree into either Estonian or English.
    • In the case of Swiss divorce certificate, an apostille is also required.
  • a copy of your identity document;

Death

Please send us by post:

  • original death certificate (multilingual CIEC form)

  • If possible, a copy of the identity document of the deceased

Name Change

Please send us by post:

  • Original name change document and a sworn translation into Estonian or English

  • A copy of your identity document

  • Alternatively, you may apply for a name change through the Estonian authorities. We recommend reviewing the relevant information on the websites of the Estonian Ministry of the Interior or the Tallinn Vital Statistics Office.
