Certificates

Estonian citizens who have registered their place of residency in the Austria, Switzerland or Slovakia can apply:

  • certificates of vital events (birth, death, marriage, divorce or change of name)
  • an extract from the population register
  • certificate of marital capacity from the Estonian Embassy in Vienna for use in Austria, Switzerland, or Slovakia.

Multilingual CIEC-format certificates (for birth, death, and marriage) are not issued by the embassy but can be requested from Estonia through the embassy if needed.

Certificates of vital events and marital capacity are available in Estonian, English, German or French.
Population register extracts are available in Estonian or English.
The state fee for one certificate is 30 euros.

The ordered document will be sent by post to the address provided in the application.
Processing time is usually 1–3 weeks.

Vital Statistics Certificates (birth, death, marriage, divorce or change of name)

Certificate of martial capacity

In order to get married in Austria, Switzerland, or Slovakia, you may be required to prove that there are no legal obstacles under Estonian law preventing you from marrying. This document is called a certificate of marital capacity.

  • a copy of your and your future spouse’s passport or ID-card
  • proof of payment of the state fee

According to the Estonian regulations the certificate will expire if the marriage is not contracted within six months after the certificate has been issued.

Certificate of Facts Known to the Consul (Consular Certificate)

A consul may issue a certificate of facts known to them, based on data from Estonian national registers or other official Estonian documents. The certificate can be issued in Estonian, German or English.

Police Clearance Certificate

In Estonia, the Police Clearance Certificate (karisturegister/Certificate of Good Conduct/Führungszeugnis) is issued by the Criminal Records Database.
The Criminal Records Database certificates are only issued in Estonian. Please find instructions on how to apply for this certificate here.
