Estonia’s Minister of Energy and Environment, Andres Sutt, participated in the 69th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna on 16 September, where he emphasized Estonia’s steadfast support for Ukraine as well as the importance of nuclear security and international cooperation.
In his speech, Minister Sutt highlighted that Estonia supports the use and development of innovative nuclear technologies to strengthen energy security and apply nuclear science and technology for medical and environmental purposes. He also stressed that the foundation of nuclear energy development lies in the highest safety standards, transparency, and international collaboration.
During the General Conference, North Estonia Medical Centre (PERH) and the IAEA signed a cooperation agreement, making PERH a partner centre in the “Rays of Hope” programme, which will allow Estonia to assist other member states in developing their radiotherapy capabilities.
Minister Sutt held several bilateral meetings in Vienna, including with representatives from Finland, France, and Ukraine, focusing on energy security, small reactor development, and nuclear legislation. Discussions with the IAEA’s nuclear infrastructure and legal departments addressed the next steps in Estonia’s nuclear energy pathway.
The Estonian delegation also met with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, who acknowledged the contributions of Estonian experts and reaffirmed the Agency’s support for Estonia in all areas related to nuclear energy.
